This module has been designed for mature students with work experience who are returning to education on a part-time distance learning basis. The course covers two broad areas: an introduction to human resource management and industrial relations. Topics covered include: human resource management, managing human resource flows, managing employee performance, reward systems, developing staff, key features of the Irish industrial relations system, trade union organisation, membership, growth and decline, the management of industrial relations; industrial relations in the public sector; collective bargaining; an introduction to third parties. Students will be expected to draw upon their own work experience in discussions in the classroom and in course assessment.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module you should be able to:Discuss the concept of HRM and how it differs from Personnel Management.Demonstrate an understanding of the human resource policy areas.Understand the key features of the Irish industrial relations system and the role of the major players in industrial relations.Understand the factors that impinge upon pay determination and critically evaluate them.
