Academic Year 2020/2021

Students will complete a 3-month professional development programme in the first trimester, prior to their placement. After which, students will complete a 6-month placement in the food industry, nutrition research, health promotion or nutrition regulatory bodies in their 3rd year. Placements will be in Ireland, UK, Europe or possibly further afield. It is intended that on completion of their Professional Work Experience (PWE) placements students will have a greater understanding of the role of the nutritionist and a greater appreciation of the relevance of technical information presented to them in their degree course. Students will see the practical application of many subjects, analyses and principles, will have the opportunity to improve their written, oral and communication skills and to practice appropriate professional conduct in the workplace.
This period of Professional Work Experience is mandatory and must be undertaken in Stage 3. Successful completion of this module is mandatory for graduating on completion of Stage 4. Students must familiarise themselves with and abide by the regulations for PWE as set out by the Agricultural Sciences Programme Board. For each placement, a host contract must be completed, signed by the host and received by UCD, before the placement will be deemed to have commenced by UCD. Furthermore, placements (and parts thereof) which have been completed in the absence of an appropriately completed host contract will not be accepted. Only in the most exceptional circumstances will any deviation from this requirement be permitted and this must have the agreement, in writing, of the PWE co-ordinator.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
• Understand the role of a nutritionist in a nutrition work/research environment,
• Overview their PWE placement and the organisation in which they completed it,
• Describe any procedures/analyses they used while on their PWE placement,
• Have implemented, analysed and written up an independent research project,
• Understand professional conduct and the Association for Nutrition’s Standards of Ethics, Conduct and Performance,
• Demonstrate awareness of their own Professional Development needs.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This is the internship module for Human Nutrition students. Each student will apply for a UCD BSc Human Nutrition approved placement. Each student will have a UCD based tutor and a placement supervisor that will support their learning. Prior to going on placement students will complete a 3-month professional development programme.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students will get feedback from their UCD tutor and their PWE supervisor throughout their placement. They will also self-assess their progress through learning review and core competency mapping tasks. Students will get individual feedback on their PWE thesis when they return to their final year following upon request.
