GPRS20010 Clinical Science and Healthcare Informatics 1

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module forms part of the core curriculum for the MB BCh BAO degree in Medicine. This course introduces students to early patient contact, health systems, first aid and healthcare informatics.
In the early patient contact component, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of confidentiality and consent when dealing with all patients, professionalism and an introduction to ethics. History taking and communication skills (theory and practice with patients) will be covered with an emphasis on the bio-psycho-social model of health and illness. Students will learn about the issues relating to “Doctors’ own Health”.
In the health systems component, students will learn about Irish and other health systems and patient and healthcare professionals’ perspectives on the health system.
In the first aid component, students will train in basic life support.
In the informatics component, students will learn about searching and appraising medical literature, alongside evidenced based medicine

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to;
1. Describe and analyse key influences on health and the effect of illness on patients, their families and their communities across different healthcare systems.
2. Take a basic patient history, identify and utilise key communication skills.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of professionalism, ethics, self-care and evidence based medicine.
4. Demonstrate proficiency in basic life support.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Peer review feedback will be available following the relevant seminar. Aggregated feedback will be made available after the submission of the portfolio and after provisional grade results of the group project. In addition, students will be given individual feedback on their portfolio submission via rubric. This feedback will be made available in the period after the provisional grade results have been released. Self assessment on group work for formative learning following group project.
