This module is primarily for Commerce International Students of German but is also open as an elective for students of German planning to go on Erasmus to Germany or Austria. It focuses on the linguistic, cultural and intellectual context in which Commerce International students of German will conduct their studies whilst on their year abroad. Students will work with contemporary German-language materials in order to critically explore key ideas and concepts underpinning the discourses of business and business-studies in German-speaking countries and to learn about some of the key structures and characteristics of the third-level institutions in which they will study. This will enable students to participate more effectively in the year abroad programme.

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand common academic structures and characteristics of German third-level institutions and reflect on the historical status and development of third-level education in Germany.
• Understand and use, both orally and in writing, key vocabulary and linguistic structures particular to academic German.
• Be able to read and discuss press articles relating to commerce and third-level education and to reflect on the rhetorical strategies adopted in such source texts.
• Be able to describe and discuss critically, in appropriate written and spoken German, key cultural characteristics of the German business sector, the role, status and function of commerce education in Germany and the relationship between Germany and the EU.

Indicative Module Content:

This module focuses on historical/current affairs (business related) in German-speaking countries. Students will also engage with marketing strategies and develop a product that they will then present to their fellow students. This is done through German, employing presentational skills that will be relevant for the year abroad. This leads to the last part of the module which focuses on cultural awareness for the semester abroad.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module requires the student to prepare required reading assignments in order to use group-based activities during class. By using videos and audios students will receive further input regarding the different topics and students are required to actively engage in discussions and present their opinion. The class will primarily be taught through German.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

In this module you will be asked to hold a group presentation in German. You will receive a written feedback sheet with a grade for the overall content of the presentation and group performance as well as an individual section and an individual grade. You will receive personal feedback from your tutor during office hours or by appointment. Written assessments will be corrected, with comments to enable further self-correction. Further feedback can always be given during office hours.
