GER10110 German Beginners B

This language module is a continuation of GER 10100 (German Beginners A). Students should thus have reached level A1 of the Common European Framework. The module will further develop students' receptive and productive language skills across the four main competencies (speaking, writing, listening and reading). At the end of the module, students will be able to participate in basic conversations about a range of topics relating to everyday life. They will be able to understand and produce simple texts, both oral and written, relating to such topics as wishes and plans, holidays and past events. Students will be required to make regular use of VLE support and engage in technology enhanced learning outside the classroom and to demonstrate an ability to manage their own learning through completion of specific learning activities. Students who achieve at least a B grade in this module are deemed to have a reasonable grasp of the key linguistic elements of the CEFR level A 2.

Learning Outcomes:

On the completion of this module, students should be able to
- produce short descriptive and narrative written texts on everyday topics, employing both present and past tense
- participate in simple conversation on topics relevant to this module
- understand the overall meaning and extract specific information from selected written and aural texts
- demonstrate familiarity and the ability to employ an appropriate range of vocabulary relating to topics relevant to the module
- display a command of sentence structures in main and sub clauses, such as conjunctions

Indicative Module Content:

This module will cover familiar topics relating to everyday life, such as family, relationships, travel and mobility, hobbies, media, professions, entertainment, cities, traditions and customs, films and inventors/ inventions. In terms of grammar, topics include subclauses, possessive articles, modal verbs, reflexive pronouns, indirect questions, personal pronouns, temporal adverbs,, prepositions (dative and accusative) and the passiv.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
In this module students will be exposed to 36 contact hours in small groups. The teaching in this course is mainly based on a course book containing texts, grammar explanations, partner exercises and reading and listening comprehension. In addition to this, online material will be available. Students will also be directed to links providing extra grammar and vocabulary support. In order to reach A2 level on the CEFR, students must attend classes, participate in all classroom activities and engage with homework exercises and online content in order to practise language skills. A typical 5-credit module requires 100 hours in total. 
Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

Knowledge of basic German grammar such as is provided in the semester 1 module GER 10100 (equivalent to CEFR level A1)

Learning Exclusions:

Students with prior formal study of German and attainment of Leaving Cert (Honours) C level or equivalent are not eligible to take this module. Students who have taken GER 10010 German Language Ia in semester 1 are not eligible to take this module.

Learning Recommendations:

Students who have not followed GER 10100 in semester 1 are advised that GER 10110 is a continuation module and assumes a knowledge of the basics of German grammar. Any student contemplating taking this module who is unsure if s/he possesses the necessary linguistic preparation should consult the module coordinator.
