GEOL40510 Geological Mapping Research

Academic Year 2023/2024

Field work is carried out, in pairs or in groups of three students, over a period of no longer than four weeks in the Autumn trimester. This fieldwork will be performed within no more than three, relatively small, areas within a manageable daily travel time of UCD by public transport and each for between 5 to 10 days. This fieldwork will involve mapping and field analysis of certain aspects of the geology of the areas. The data recorded independently by each student on field sheets, field notebooks and photographs will form the basis for: (i) Production of a detailed map for each area, drawn to publication standard using mapping/draughting and GIS software, during the first semester. (ii) Presentation of a poster and seminar on each area during the first semester. (iii) Preparation of draft version of a research report, documenting the research and results, during the first semester, and completion and submission of the report early in the second semester.
