GEOL30360 Work Placement - Geoscience

Academic Year 2023/2024

The opportunity of a professional geoscience work experience is offered to students over a 6-10 week period during the summer between 3rd and 4th year. The aim of this module is to give students the opportunity to develop an understanding of how geoscience operates in a professional working environment and how theory presented in other modules translates to practice. Placements may vary considerably, but in general students will obain a breadth of practical experience through their placement to complement their degree programme. Whenever possible, paid placements are sought.

Work placements are available subject to availability and satisfactory academic performance in the Autumn trimester of Stage 3 Geology. Selection of students for placements will normally be subject to interview by potential placement organizations. An initial selection process may be undertaken by the School of Earth Sciences before employers are contacted. Students interested in enrolling to the module must first contact the module co-ordinator before the end of the Autumn trimester to allow adequate time to make arrangements with potential industry hosts. Students may alternatively source their own geoscience-related work placements subject to prior approval of the module co-ordinator.

A member of the academic staff will be appointed to liaise with the student during the period of the work placement. The member of academic staff will maintain contact with the student and the student's supervisor within the placement organisation to ensure that the student is meeting the learning outcomes associated with the module.

Assessment will take place on completion of the placement and submission of reports by both student and employer. The module will be assessed as Pass/Fail. Successful completion of the module will result in a module grade P which will be grade point neutral. An unsuccessful attempt at the module will be awarded an F or NG grade, giving a grade point of 1.0 or 0, respectively. Failure to meet the learning outcomes associated with this module represents grounds for failure.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will be expected to: (1) Understand how theory developed in classes in other modules is applied; (2) develop their understanding of geoscientific methodologies and their ability to apply them in a working environment; (3) understand health and safety issues in a working environment; (4) understand the need for high ethical standards in the practice of geoscience; (5) act independently and manage time effectively; (6) improve their interpersonal occupational skills and competence in teamwork; (7) demonstrate critical reflection on their learning and their activities during placement including identification of any skills gaps.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This is a module in which students are expected to obtain 'hands-on' practical experience in the workplace, using the knowledge and skills that they have gained in other modules. It is also an opportunity to develop important 'soft skills' that are essential in the workplace.
