GEOG40630 Development in Asia

Contemporary Asia is a dynamic world region characterised by extreme social, cultural
and biophysical diversity, as well as rapid transformation. This module introduces the key
theories, concepts, themes and challenges within the theory and practice of development, which will examined in relation to the Asian context. The main factors underpinning processes of economic, socio-cultural, political, and environmental change in Asia will be examined through regional and local case studies. Moreover, emphasis will be placed on debates over the impacts – benefits, costs and
risks - of different development approaches on Asia’s people and places.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module, students will have:
1. A broad understanding of the key current concepts and questions in
development geography via an examination of the Asian region.
2. A critical understanding of the main processes of socio-cultural, economic, political
and environmental development and change taking place in Asia, as well as their
impacts on Asia’s people and places.
3. Developed critical writing and analytical skills through essay-writing, synthesising
readings, formal presentation, and oral critiquing.
