FS10050 Media and Globalisation: Places, Cultures and Identities in a Connected World

Academic Year 2020/2021

What role do media (film, television, digital) play in shaping our ideas about the world? How do diverse audiences use global media in everyday life to negotiate issues of social and cultural identity? How do we understand and work with concepts like cosmopolitanism and hybridity?

Through an exploration of the complex and contradictory relationships between the global, local, and national, this module will focus on the key issues and scholarly debates in the field of global media studies. We will explore a broad range of media as our case studies to understand the relationship between location, culture, and identity. This course aims to equip students with a broad-ranging and comparative understanding of the many ways in which media are produced, consumed, distributed, and circulated across the globe and their impact on our imaginations of a global world.
