FR40390 Reading French for Research Purposes

Academic Year 2023/2024

This course is intended for postgraduate students in any discipline who have a professional need or desire to be able to read and translate texts written in French. As such, it is entirely focussed on learning how to accurately read/decipher French texts rather than on the three other skills (speaking, hearing, writing) that one finds in traditional French courses.

Over the course of the semester, we will cover the main points of French grammar; ways of efficiently building one's French vocabulary; problematic structures; 'false friends' and more. Weekly exercises will include translation of passages from French works of scholarly interest into English.
