European imperialism and other forces of globalization have had profound effects on the way many, if not most, contemporary writers work. This course will examine three texts that bear witness in French to the richness and to the complexities faced and explored by writers whose identities or affiliations are more complex, more complicated and more mixed than singular, and whose sense of belonging is more uncertain and questioning than fixed or secure. Our reading of these texts will allow us to explore the losses and gains of migration and of translingual or transcultural mobility.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to: discuss the concepts of francophone literature and of postcolonial writing in relation to the work of contemporary authors of various, multiple, or uncertain cultural affiliations, for example Caribbean, French, Canadian, or Tunisian; situate the importance of displacement and migration in relation to the contemporary (postcolonial) articulation of cultural difference and identity; analyse how contemporary prose forms in French, especially (auto-fictional) narratives, address or negotiate issues of selfhood and identity, place, displacement and belonging. They should also be able to reflect on the value of writing in the contemporary world.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Weekly seminar work: discussions focus on the set primary texts and on related critical reading. Student participation is to the fore. Informal student presentations prepare the ground for formal presentation exercises.

Learning Requirements:

BA or equivalent.
An ability to read and speak French to a high standard. Texts and seminar work in French.
