FR10060 French Grammar & Comprehension

Academic Year 2021/2022

This is a level-one module for French language. It is not a beginners' level course but builds on the basic communicative proficiency, language awareness and cultural awareness acquired through the Irish Leaving Certificate programme (the recommended entry level is normally a minimum grade H4 (pre-2017 C2) in Leaving Certificate French or equivalent). The module focuses primarily on consolidating general linguistic competence and developing the receptive skills of comprehension of written French. Students who have achieved at least a B grade in this module are deemed to be successfully progressing towards the CEFR level B1.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to: - recognize, understand and manipulate a wide range of grammatical structures; - understand written texts on francophone civilisation topics; - derive and re-use ideas and vocabulary from written texts; - reformulate and analyse information provided through the medium of written French; - progress towards CEFR Level B1

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Approaches to teaching and learning may vary in line with university and public health guidelines.

The lectures introduce module tasks and grammar points. The small-group classes are based around practical work on grammar exercises and written comprehension tasks and related feedback.
