FIN41390 Environmental Finance

Academic Year 2019/2020

This module provides a detailed description of the theory and practice of environmental finance and investing. The module will introduce the key institutional investors, investment vehicles, trading instruments and global emission trading schemes. Key topics include but are not limited to carbon finance, carbon footprinting, fossil fuel divestment, greenbonds, greenhouse gas reporting, shareholder activism for enhanced corporate environmental responsibility, sustainable investing, the United Nations' Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and the Social Stock Exchange (SSX). Tools and processes to raising private equity or venture capital for environmental projects will also be discussed. Recent academic research and professional development will be integrated into all aspects of this module.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of how financial markets can be used to regulate polluting industries or other reduce polution.
2. Explain the tools of how capital can be raised for environmental projects.
3. Apply a range of risk management tools to both, environmentally motivated and conventional investing.
4. Relate the recent developments in responsible investing to the changes in funding for environmentally desirable/undesrirable industries.
