EQUL40140 Minor Thesis

Academic Year 2019/2020

The Equality Studies thesis is a dissertation of 15,000 words. Students are not required to do primary field research (interviews, surveys, etc.) and if they choose to do so they are encouraged to engage in small-scale, illustrative research rather than research which on its own is likely to be definitive. A mandatory research module, usually run in Spring, helps students to develop their proposals, to explore different forms of research and to learn about the process of research design.

Demonstrate specialized, detailed and advanced theoretical and conceptual knowledge and understanding of the area of equality studies to which their thesis is devoted; 2. Explain current debates at the forefront of the field with which their thesis is concerned; 3. Use the knowledge and insights derived from their research findings to understand and illuminate wider social concerns which extend beyond the confines of their specific research question; 4. Make informed judgements about the topic of their thesis based on complex and (necessarily) incomplete information; 5. Reflect on wider social issues raised by the topic of their thesis; 6. Communicate their conclusions about the topic of their thesis, and the knowledge and rationale underpinning these, to specialist and non-specialist audiences clearly and unambiguously; 7. Have the learning skills to be able to continue to enter higher research in equality studies in a largely self-directed or autonomous manner

• Students should submit written work in advance of each session; this must be typed, proof read, and provided in hard copy format (electronic format may be allowed if agreed with supervisor);
• Supervisor reads students' work only once and only if the student sends it ahead of the meeting/skype conversation or any other form of work revision that is agreed between the supervisor and the student.
