ENG31960 Apocalyse Then: Old Eng. Lit.

As the year 1000 approached, the Anglo-Saxons were filled with fear, both for the coming apocalypse expected 1000 years after Christ and the very real Viking invasion that they could see all around them. In fact, for many Anglo-Saxon writers, the Vikings were merely one sign of the coming Apocalypse. This module will explore how apocalyptic thinking comes to intertwine with reactions to Viking invasions. Through the course of the trimester, we will investigate questions of religion, ethnicity, and gender, as the Anglo-Saxons decide how best to respond to the end of the world as they knew it.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the trimester, students should be able to:

1. Describe the apocalyptic ideals of the Anglo-Saxons
2. Explain the complex relationships that Anglo-Saxons had with their Viking cousins/ancestors
3. Perform a close reading of an Old English text (in translation) that recognizes both formal and historical details
4. Analyze literary research and create an effective argument that combines both literary scholarship and literary analysis.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

The first half of the module will have writing assignments keyed to reading assignments. Group feedback in class will be offered on these. After the midterm, various writing tasks keyed to the final essay will be assigned. Students will receive both written and oral feedback individually on these assignments.
