ENG00010 Reading English Literature

This introductory module is aimed at students who love reading, who value literature and appreciate its fundamental role in shaping society and the individual. ‘Ways of Reading’ will help you to develop your close readings skills and to expand your critical approaches to literature. The module will to help you to identify and engage with both a range of literary genres and different literary traditions. The module will strive to foster independent thought, creativity, collaboration, critical reflection, cultural engagement, and social and political consciousness through innovative teaching, learning and assessment methods. Work is assessed by close reading exercises and essays. Together these modes of assessment foster the development of a range of important qualities and skills. This module will help to prepare you for undergraduate study in Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Law as well as for a variety of different workplaces.

Indicative Module Content:

Students will read a selection of texts, including drama, fiction and poetry, from the early-modern period to the present.
