EEEN30090 Electrical Machines

Academic Year 2020/2021

1. Fundamental magnetic circuits: magnetic characteristics of iron, B/H curves, hysteresis and eddy currents; magnetic circuits and magnetic equivalent circuit - electrical equivalent circuit;
2. Transformers: single-phase and 3-phase power transformers; construction; insulation, thermal management and lifetime; connection schemes; equivalent circuit model; performance; parallel operation and load sharing;
3. Brushed DC machines: construction; torque production; equivalent circuit model; torque-speed characteristic; basic machine drives;
4. Induction machines: construction; fundamental analysis of distributed windings, flux density, flux, flux linkage and inductance; rotating magnetic fields; development of equivalent circuit model, torque-speed characteristic;
5. Synchronous machines: construction; development of the equivalent circuit and use of same in analysing of machine connected to an infinite bus, load chart, synchronising; steady-state characteristics and operational performance;
6. Case studies: electric vehicle traction motors; electrical power generators.

Learning Outcomes:

Develop mathematical models for magnetic circuits where iron includes all or part of the circuit; Analyse and synthesise magnetic circuits; Develop mathematical models for the fundamental electrical machines including transformers, dc machines, induction machines and synchronous machines; Analyse the operation of the basic machine types electrically coupled to various circuits and systems and mechanically coupled to loads or prime movers.
