EDUC42800 Pedagogical Approaches to Mathematics

Academic Year 2020/2021

This module builds on modules MATH30320 and MATH30330 and aims to further develop students’ pedagogical content knowledge required to teach mathematics at post-primary level. This module will particularly focus on Junior Cycle Mathematics and on the skills required of student teachers who are on continuous school placement. As part of lectures, pedagogical issues related to mathematics reform will be discussed, as relevant to the research literature in mathematics education.
During this module students will engage directly with the Irish post-primary curriculum and will further explore teaching and learning approaches associated with introducing and developing mathematics topics. Students will construct lesson plans according to the content met in lectures and will be encouraged to develop and reflect on appropriate strategies to facilitate the development of mathematical understanding and skills for all learners. Students will also be introduced to further resources and curriculum materials related to teaching and learning mathematics.
Students will be engaged in critical reflection on their practice and will reflect on their learning over the course of the trimester.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students will be enabled to:
• Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the mathematics curriculum for Junior Cycle and demonstrate an ability to communicate this knowledge in an accessible, engaging, and informative way.
• Design lesson and unit plans that reflect a variety of teaching methodologies and assessment strategies that are aligned with curriculum content.
• Be familiar with literature on mathematics education research and reflect on their own pedagogical practices relative to the literature.
• Reflect on learners who have additional needs in the classroom and develop appropriate strategies in mathematics to facilitate their learning.
• Critically reflect on their own teaching and learning as pre-service teachers of mathematics
• Critically reflect on the development of their Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (Ball et al. 2008) as a result of the first trimester of their continuous school placement.
