The aim of this module is to instruct and support students in the design, planning and preparation of a small-scale, research project in relation to the production of a minor thesis.
The module seeks to develop practical, research design and action skills, and also probes deeper questions to do with research theory and methodology. Course content will include: choosing an appropriate research topic, developing research questions, conceptual and theoretical frameworks in research, developing familiarity with the principal education research paradigms; research ethics and navigating the UCD ethical clearance process; the uses of literature in research; and developing a preliminary research proposal.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Use a range of research design skills as appropriate to an education research context.
2. Demonstrate strong understanding of the relationship between theory, research and practice.
3. Analyse a thesis-level problem and detain a strategy to respond to the key research challenges of the intended situation and topic.
