During this module, students will be introduced to a range of ideas that underpin science education.

The module will be practical in nature. Students will work (in teams) with primary school classes to apply and reflect on ideas introduced in College.

Learning Outcomes:

The primary learning intention of this module is for students to co-teach a science project in a local primary school. This will require
- An understanding and application of the scientific process.
- Evaluation of pertinent ideas and literature on teaching science.
- An introduction to co-teaching. This involves co-planning, co-delivery, and co-evaluation of content and pedagogy with your student team and cooperating teacher.
- Reflecting on ‘you as a science learner’ and co-teacher.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The 12 week module takes a project-based approach. The format is quite informal with no Powerpoint or formal presentations. Students will be empowered rather than led.

Students will work in small groups for the project. Each group will be assigned to one primary school class and will work closely with the teacher. The group will work together to co-plan, co-teach, and co-reflect. Class-time will see the groups work with their lecturer on each of these.

Class-based discussions will take place on practical elements of the term-long project as well as more theoretical matters that arise (e.g. a conversation on how to assess students' learning in a science laboratory may lead to conversations on assessment or laboratory practicals in university).

Individual student work will involve promoted reflective diaries as well as logistical issues demanded of them by their project

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Given the practical, project-based, nature of this module, feedback will be offered over the entire trimester. An in-the-moment approach will be employed such that students can put in to practice advice given. Student diaries aim to promote self-assessment through reflection. The Lecturer will provide comments on the diary as they are written. In-class activities will be driven by the students' project work, with the lecturer providing input and feedback. Students will be working in groups and, as such, they will be expected to peer-review their work and performance. Students may also receive feedback from their cooperating teacher.
