EDF10020 Page, Stage & Screen II

Academic Year 2020/2021

This module is for students on the English, Drama and Film pathway only. It focuses on issues of adaptation, and considers the different meanings generated by the same texts in cinematic, theatrical, and literary form. Taking a number of texts that are translated across all three forms as representative case studies, the module will consider issues in adaptation such as temporaral or geographical setting, cultural difference, intertextuality, performance, direct and indirect adaptation, and formal specificity, among others. It will ask students to consider what happens to a text in adaptation: does it remain connected to its 'original', or is it a new text in its own right? How is meaning, motivation, and performance translated across forms?
