ECON30430 Economics of International Fin

This module focuses on the finance and macroeconomics of international financial flows. It covers the history of post-War financial arrangements, from Bretton Woods to the modern globalised financial system. Other topics to be covered include the determinants of the balance of payments, relationships between currency arrangements and capital flows and between trade and financial flows, the role played by capital inflows and outflows in financial crisis, the determinants and financing of foreign direct investment, the role of the IMF in the global economy and the case for a global tax on financial transactions.

This module may be taken as part of a Structured Elective in Economics. This means that if you combine this module with at least 10 additional credits from other economics modules you will be awarded a ‘structured elective in economics’ on your transcript.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to understand the main problems facing governments and central banks operating in an open economy, with particular reference to understanding how the global financial system works and whether a global tax system and financial regulatory framework is needed.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Lecture in class: 2 hours per week
Debates and case-based learning: Students will be presented with real economic examples and they will be asked to debate on whether the models described in class can explain those examples.
