DRAM40430 Theatre Practice 1 (GSA)

This module invites students to engage with methods of theatre devising and performance making. In this experiential module students research methods of generating ideas for development towards performance as makers, directors and performers. The emphasis is on collaboration, and students are taught a range of methods to create physical, verbal and visual texts. The work created in each class is researched and developed using techniques of deconstruction and layering while examining the languages and sign systems of theatre. Throughout the module students research and test theories on the making and reception of performance narratives. The work in studio practice starts with physical and visual material generated from a variety of stimuli for use in the construction of small theatre pieces.

On successful completion of the module students will be equipped to:

Apply skills in devising theatre and performance
Create theatre and performance using collaborative practices
Engage with the roles of performer, theatre maker, and director
Research and test how physical, verbal, and visual stimuli can generate ideas for the creation of performance
Critically analyse theoretical debates of audience and reception

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students are introduced to methods of theatre practice. Learning is experiential, task-orientated, based on ongoing creation of small works of performance. Students work in group settings and discursive analytical fora are established at the end of each class. Feedback operates on a continuous basis from the module leader.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Feedback is offered on-going at the end of class in group and individual settings. Feedback is offered in weeks 10-11 in preparation for in-class Assessment in Week 12. Feedback is scheduled formally in the post-assessment period.
