DRAM10070 Early Irish Theatre Movement

Academic Year 2020/2021

This module will examine plays from the early twentieth century which led to the foundation of an Irish national theatre. Individual texts by the following authors will be considered: W.B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, J.M. Synge, Sean O'Casey. Attention will be paid to the aims of the founders, the dramaturgic innovations of the movement, but also to the reality they encountered in their reception, to the political and social conditions in which the plays were first performed. The course will also ask the students to consider the contemporary relevance of the work, how these plays might translate into the 21st century.
