CULP40050 Research Methods/Seminar

The objective of this module is to assist students in the selection of their research topic, and to provide the necessary support for students to develop an appropriate research methodology and plan. Topics include the basics of quantitative/qualitative research, creating a literature review and utilizing secondary sources, information management, evaluation of results and writing/referencing skills. The culmination of the course is the submission of a research proposal which provides the framework for the MA thesis. Readings and exercises are designed to prepare students for undertaking the thesis, and to provide critical feedback from classmates and the instructor in advance of commencing research. The research proposal will be followed by a formal oral presentation of research plans & progress. Taught class sessions in semester 1 will be supplemented by individual meetings with each student to discuss progress of ideas and research structure. Support and guidance towards completion of the MA thesis begins with this course, and carries on throughout the spring semester and the following summer.
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:1. identify an appropriate research topic.2. understand the basics of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.3. create a critical literature review. 4. develop research questions, objectives and hypotheses.5. plan, organise, and analyse a research project.6. evaluate research and relate theory to practice.

Students who fail this module have the opportunity to resit the component(s) failed. Students should contact the course director to discuss resit arrangements. 
Required - An honours university degree at minimum level of 2.2 and work experience in the cultural sector. Selection is by short-listing and interview.
