COMP41620 Professional Java Programming Part II

Academic Year 2019/2020

This module is aimed at students who are already programmers (could be Java or another language), to enable them to become familiar with, and proficient in, Java. The topics will be chosen from the following areas:
Exceptions & Assertions;
Input & Output;
Strings, Formatters & Wrappers;
Collections & Generics;
Threads.

The conversion of the exam mark to a grade does not follow the usual UCD mark conversion scheme. In particular, the exam pass mark is 17/30 (corresponds to a grade of D-), with each additional mark corresponding to an additional sub-letter-grade up to 26/30 (corresponding to a grade of A-). An exam mark of 27 or 28 corresponds to a grade of A, while 29 or 30 corresponds to a grade of A+

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. understand the structure and the syntax of the Java programming language;
2. create simple Java applications;
3. have an in-depth detailed knowledge of the Java run time environment.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This is a technical module that is delivered online only with flexible assessment schedules. The module does not involve any group work.

Learning Requirements:

Knowledge of a programming language is required to take this module; however the language does not need to be object-oriented or Java.

Learning Recommendations:

Knowledge and practice of a computer programming language.
