CHN20010 Int. Spoken Chinese I

This module is designed with a focus on improving students’ oral communicative competencies towards an intermediate level. In addition to further consolidating the skills that students have acquired in listening and speaking, this module aims to enhance students’ pronunciation, fluency, accuracy and range of vocabulary in spoken Chinese, by introducing more topics in daily life communication as well as in cultural contexts.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1) communicate effectively on a variety of general topics related to daily life;
2) initiate and maintain conversations in most of everyday contexts;
3) understand clear standard input on familiar topics regularly encountered in daily life.




Indicative Module Content:

This module uses HSK Standard Course 3 (Lesson 1-10) as main teaching materials, and supplementary materials at equivalent level.
Lesson 1 周末你有什么打算(好-the complement of result; 一……也/都+不/没……)
Lesson 2 他什么时候回来(complements of direction; 能……吗?)
Lesson 3 桌子上放着很多饮料(还是VS或者;着-existence;会-possibility)
Lesson 4 她总是笑着跟客人说话(又……又……;着-accompanying action)
Lesson 5 我最近越来越胖了(了indicating change;越来越)
Lesson 6 怎么突然找不到了(complements of possibility;刚VS刚才)

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be delivered in small-sized class and students’ learning will be guided using digital tools for maximized efficiency. The module will be taught mainly in Chinese. 
Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

In order to take this module, students need to have prior knowledge which is equivalent to HSK Level 2.

Learning Exclusions:

The students who are native Mandarin speakers are not eligible to take this module as an elective.

The lecturer reserves the right to assess the language competence of all students. Students whose competence is incompatible with the level of their chosen elective module will be advised to transfer to a more appropriate language module.
