This module builds on the foundation in Chinese language provided in Chinese Language Experience II. The aim of this module is to enable students to further develop their accuracy, fluency and overall competence in Chinese through guided study and using web-based and multimedia materials.

Learning Outcomes:

On satisfactory completion of this course, students should be able to:
1) Understand phrases, sentences and short conversations on topics such as daily routines, campus life, learning routines, when speech is clearly audible.
2) Communicate in routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on topics given above.
3) Understand and fluently use everyday expressions and phrases in predictable situations.
4) Enunciate learned phrases and sentences with correct pronunciation.
5) Achieve HSK level 2.
6) Build up a vocabulary of 400 words.

Indicative Module Content:

Week 1 Complements of results ; The preposition “从”; “第” indicating order
Week 2 The imperative sentence“不要…..了”/“别…..了”; The preposition“对”
Week 3 A verb phrase used as an attributive modifier; Advanced comparative sentences with“比”(1)
Week 4 Complements of state;The “比” sentence(2)
Week 5 Revision
Week 6 The preposition“往”;The rhetorical question “不是……吗”
Week 7 The aspect particle“过”;The pair of conjunctions“虽然……但是……”
Week 8 The complement of frequency “次”;The auxiliary verb“可能”
Week 9 The structure “都……了”;Indicate the state of an action with “要……了”
Week 10 The aspect particle “着”;The sentence“不是……吗”
Week 11 The sentence “能……吗”;“……过……没有”

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students will learn conversations on daily topics through interactive topic workshops, oral practice, grammar and vocabulary work as well as tutorials. The course also introduces students to learning Chinese with the assistance of computers, smartphones and other online resources. 
Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

In order to take this module, students should have prior learning experience which is equivalent to HSK level 1. Students should also be familiar with some HSK level 2 content (approx. 50%).

Learning Exclusions:

Students who are native Mandarin speakers are not eligible to take this module as an elective.

The lecturer reserves the right to assess the language competence of all students. Students whose competence is incompatible with the level of their chosen elective module will be advised to transfer to a more appropriate language module.
