CHEN40740 CBE Work Placement I

Academic Year 2020/2021

This aim of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to gain Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering work experience, in a sturctured setting, for a period of 3 to 4 months, beginning in January/February. Candidates wil normally have already completed 3.5 years of full-time Chemical/Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering education. The placement is expected to involved professionally-relevant work, outside UCD, on a full-time basis. Students will not normally be able to undertake other credit-bearing modules during the placement period.

A member of the academic staff will be appointed as Academic Supervisor to liaise with the student during the period of the work placement. The placement provider will nominate a Sponsor within the organization to oversee the placement. A programme of work will be agreed between the University and the Sponsor, to ensure that the student can meet the learning outcomes associated with this module, using the opportunities available during the schedued period of placement. The Supervisor will maintain contact with the student, and with the student's Sponsor, during the work placement period. Special arrangements for supervision apply in the case of students on placement overseas. Attendance requirements are agreed in consultation with the student, Supervisor and Sponsor and may, in certain cases, exceed the minimum requirements of the module descriptor.

- Students are required to participate in pre-placement preparation, as specified, to include pre-placement information sessions, CV/Interview preparation sessions and pre-placement completion of specificed AIChE SAChE Safety Certificate Modules. (All students enrolled in CHEN40740 are required to register for (free) AIChE Student Membership.)

- An assessment will be sought from an employer and/or Academic Supervisor, commenting on the student's engagement with the process and highlighting any particular achievements.

- Students may be required to present for Oral Examination on completion of the placement.

- The module will be assessed on a Pass/Fail basis. Successful completion of the module will result in the award of the credits, with a module grade P assigned. This module is grade point neutral and will not contribute directly to the degree GPA. Failure to meet the learning outcomes associated with the module represents grounds for failure. Remediation of failure may be discuessed with the Module Coordinator.

- All aspects of the placement will be managed in accordance with the UCD Academic Policy document 'Internship/Work Practice Experience: Guidelines and Good Practice', approved 12 April 2007. V.1.5. (Last updated: 1 May 2014.)

All students enrolled in CHEN40740 also take (concurrently) CHEN40680 (CBE Work Placement Log Book) and CHEN40690 (CBE Work placement Knowledge). Upon the successful completion of these modules, students can advance onto the second work placement which comprises of three 10-credit modules, namely CHEN40700 (Advanced CBE Work Placement Knowledge), CHEN40750 (CBE Work Placement II) and CHEN40760 (Research Methods in CBE).

Taken together, with these two Trimesters of modules, a student should be able to

- Apply, to practical situations, chemical/bioprocess and general engineering knowledge.
