CHEN40500 Academic Writing in CBE

Academic Year 2015/2016

This module is designed to facilitate and support graduate students in the development of their academic writing skills. The broad focus of the module is on publishing academic writing in both Engineering and Scientific field, with students identifying their own writing projects within these areas. Each written project is peer reviewed within the group and all students are expected to submit at least one article over the course of the academic year and to review all articles submitted to the group.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Identify an academic writing task appropriate to the current stage of their graduate career;
2. Write an article for publication grounded within their area of graduate research;
3. Assess journals in terms of maximising the impact of published work;
4. Use peer review to adapt and rewrite their journal article;
5. Critically review journal articles in the general field of their PhD research;
6. Provide constructive feedback on journal articles in the general field of their PhD research.
