CHEN40490 Teaching Assistant in CBE

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module is designed to support the professional development of graduate students in Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering who are actively engaged in a teaching role (i.e. laboratory demonstrator and or module tutor) within the UCD School of Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering. The module will consist of 3 elements:
(1) an introduction to the practicalities of demonstrating/tutoring, including preparation for relevant experiments/laboratory work and laboratory safety;
(2) coverage of theoretical approaches to learning and assessment;
(3) a professional element, requiring that participants display a suitable standard of preparation, punctuality, presentation and safety awareness.

Participants will apply some of the basic generic and discipline specific skills in their teaching. They will be expected to engage in a scholarly discussion with their peers on best practices in teaching and learning with reference to their discipline and teaching environment. They will be encouraged to self-assess based on feedback from their peers and/or their students and encouraged to take responsibility for judging the quality of their module. Administrative competence will also be expected with regard to timely marks entry and custody of laboratory notebooks, which are effectively examination documents.

Module participants must be registered/about to register for a Masters/PhD degree in Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering and must be in an active teaching role.

This module is graded on a Pass/Fail basis, with a Pass mark of 50%.
