Biological activity results from the interactions between biological macromolecules. The investigation
of structural dynamics and functional modifications is essential for understanding details of biological
processes at a molecular level.
The module will give an overview of the application of different spectroscopic and analytical
techniques for monitoring biological processes. These include NMR spectroscopy, mass
spectrometry, imaging, and fluorescence. The content of this module goes beyond the mere
theoretical aspects of the individual techniques. Emphasis will be placed on the application of NMR
spectroscopy to understand biological reactions in complex environments and in real-time mass
spectrometry for analysis and profiling of glycans and glycoconjugates; ; live cell imaging to visualise
interactions between various cellular components; and different fluorescence essays in biochemistry
and biology (i.e. FRET, microscale termophorese). Examples taken from recent publications will be
presented and discussed.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course, the students will have a good overview of both classical and innovative
techniques for the monitoring of biological processes and will be able to discern which technique is
the most appropriate to follow a specific biological process.
