BSEN40460 Research, Teaching & Career Skills

This module is designed to introduce research and taught masters students to the essential skills of career development, research and teaching. These are transferable skills required in any workplace environment. The module is divided into three parts:
(1) Career Development skills: CV; interview technique.
(2) Research skills: introduction to information resources (examples include journals, library resources, digital archives); online academic tools (Sciene Direct, Web of Knowledge, Scopus); searching and assessing the merit of information from digital resources; Ethics & Integrity; Data management; structured writing; oral communication.
(3) Teaching skills: role of teaching assistants; modes of learning; plagiarism and cheating; assessment; objectivity and grading.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module you will be able to:
- Present yourself to potential employers in a professional and honest manner
- Identify the merit of an information source (e.g. peer reviewed journal or web archive)
- Synthesise your research work into structured writing
- Communicate and present your work effectively
- Effectively contribute teaching activities in your workplace

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Module is taught across three main components: careers development, research skills and teaching skills.
Module is delivered through lectures, which are face to face with a self directed workshop online components.
The module assessment covers all three components through continuous a range of continuous assessment.
