BMOL30040 Receptor-mediated cell signalling

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module forms part of the Stage 3 core curriculum in Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Neuroscience BSc degree programmes. It provides a description of intracellular mechanisms associated with cell communication. Details of the molecular components of signal transduction cascades, including first messengers, cell surface and nuclear receptors, intracellular signalling molecules and target proteins, are discussed. The module includes a discussion of the biochemical and pharmacological techniques used in the study of signalling pathways. Practical classes include both laboratory-based and computer-aided learning (CAL) exercises that illustrate specific aspects of cell signalling pathways.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
Explain the principles of cell communication.
Through specific examples, describe the molecular components of signal transduction cascades.
Describe the experimental approaches that are used to investigate intercellular and intracellular signalling pathways.
Explain the importance of cell signalling pathways as targets for drug action.
