BIOL50040 Research Seminar Series

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module aims to improve scientific communication skills through attendance/observation of weekly research seminars held in the School of Biology and Environmental Science (SBES) over the course of one trimester. Seminars are given by speakers from a range of Irish and international universities, as well as from various UCD schools including SBES. Students will also attend/observe and contribute to a series of seminars given by the SBES postgraduate community. This module will therefore enhance the student’s ability to comprehend the latest scientific advances and improve capability to effectively communicate their own research.

Learning Outcomes:

The seminar series provides PhD students with opportunities to improve their scientific communication skills and deepen their knowledge within their own particular research field. In addition, the range of topics covered during the series maintains and enhances their breadth of knowledge across the Biological and Environmental Sciences. At the end of this module students should therefore be able to:
(1) produce a high quality oral presentation explaining their research topic to an audience of their peers, (2) comprehend and understand cutting-edge research seminars over a range of biological and environmental topics, (3) write an extensive and accurate review essay of a scientific research topic selected from a chosen seminar.
