BIOL40310 Scientific Writing and Communication Skills

The module is a combined workshop and seminar series for candidates on the Earth and Natural Sciences Doctoral Studies Programme but is open to any student interested in the broad areas covered by the Programme. Students will attend a series of workshops presented by international experts in the fields of energy, climate change, resource characterisation, policy, planning and law, providing them with an inter-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary and super-disciplinary overview of how thematic project can lead to a more effective policy transfer of scientific research. Within the seminar element, students themselves will present their work to their peers and to external experts in their field. They will provide background material for review by other participants in the module and will be expected to discuss the materials as part of both large and small groups.

This module will only run in the Academic Session 2015-16 if there are sufficient student numbers. Please contact the module co-ordinator to express your interest before enroling for this module.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will have the opportunity to participate in workshops and seminars across a wide range of disparate yet interconnected topics. The students are exposed to new, innovative and novel research concepts and methods as presented by experts in the field and peers from other disciplines. The students will interact in open fora and small groups, both with other students studying similar topics with students from different disciplines. This will foster inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary discussion and interaction. Students will have to present their work to both scientific and non-scientific audiences, strengthening their public speaking repertoire. Students will also be expected to prepare and produce a scientific poster.
