BIOC40090 Biochemistry research project

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module is core for stage 4 of the honours BSc degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Students are required to undertake a research project on a specified topic. Each student is assigned to a member of the academic staff, who will supervise the project. On completion of the practical component of the project (12 weeks), each student must write a report and make an oral presentation of their findings. Laboratory work is undertaken in Autumn; project write-up and presentation is completed in Spring. There may be some places available on a pilot alternative project module. This involves a 4 week advanced techniques course followed by a short laboratory or literature based project.
Due to current health pandemic (COVID) related to laboratory working environments and health and safety issues, most of the projects are mainly associated with data analysis, data interpretation with restricted wet lab exposure.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to:1. Design and perform experiments using the techniques learned in their research project.2. Analyse and critically-evaluate scientific data.3. Perform a literature search on a specific topic in biochemistry and write a literature review.4. Make an oral presentation.5. Write a scientific report.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students will have learned how to handle a laboratory project. Additionally they will learn writing skills, presentation skills, working in a group and problem solving abilities in a guided environment.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students will be guided by the PI and feedback will be given throughout the research project. This will help to develop new ideas of carrying out research project. Oral presentation Q&A and feedback will help them present their data to a scientific audience with confident.
