ARCT30040 Architectural Design VI

Academic Year 2020/2021

In this module the nature of collective identity is studied through the design of a public building with a complex functional brief. The project investigates the relationship between the individual and the collective and moves between the elaboration of ideas about social space at the micro scale and the design of significant public buildings in particular contexts. The design process is underpinned by the study of precedent and of the culture and representation of public space in the urban context. Students are encouraged to challenge accepted assumptions and perceptions about collective space through an individual interpretation and development of the brief. They are expected to progress the design of their project through models, drawings and other appropriate media via a series of interim submissions to an accomplished level in the final presentation. Students are also expected to develop a critical work method and an architectural language to support their future development. The teaching of the module is carried out through design seminars, workshops, presentations, reviews and individual tuition in the studio. During this trimester building technology will be taught as an integral part of design studio. Students must complete all parts of the project in this module, and attendance during design studio sessions is mandatory. Students are required to submit an individual collated and organised physical and digital portfolio of their trimester's work including all drawings, models and sketches etc., which must demonstrate the required learning outcomes. All of the learning outcomes must be adequately demonstrated to pass the module.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an ability to critique and develop projects from a conceptual or theoretical position through to a material and spatial proposition.
2. Analyse and respond to some of the critical issues surrounding the design of spaces for a significant public building and make considered design interventions in a specified urban context.
3. Demonstrate the ability to interpret and develop the requirements of a complex brief and its relationship to its urban context in an appropriate organizational and spatial form.
4. Realise the design intentions of the project through the integration of aesthetic, formal and functional considerations with materials, structure, building technology, environmental and sustainable issues.
5. Make the character and presence of the project in its context appropriate to the public nature of the building and its functional requirements.
6. Demonstrate an ability to analyse and respond critically to precedents in urban and public building design and to use these as an active component in the design process.
7. Demonstrate an ability to use a variety of representational skills appropriate to the various stages of the design project and to its design intent, and to present/exhibit work coherently.
