ARCH40700 Managing landscape heritage

Academic Year 2019/2020

The aim of the this module is to engage with the key issues in the management and conservation of archaeological, historic, cultural landscapes in Ireland and internationally. Using the European Landscape Convention as a starting point a distinction will be drawn between discussion and identification of specific and special landscape areas and the concept of the historic landscape and its character.

The module will have two complementary components. In seminars given by speakers representing a wide range of perspectives and outlooks current approaches to strategies for the management and future shape of the landscape will be explored and discussed. To provide a particular focus to this discussion there will be a field-based component of the module which will focus on the World Heritage Programme in Ireland and its national and international contexts. This provides an opportunity to explore how a globally recognised set of principles and approaches to site/property and landscape identification and management is being applied in an Irish context where there is very lively debate about the value and meaning of landscape.

The module will provide students with an overview of the principles, currrent practices and trends in approaches to landscape and its management that will shape the future.
