Academic Year 2023/2024

Crafting abstracts, writing conference papers and presenting them for academic audiences are key skills of postgraduate training. PhD students enrolled in this module will present a paper at an academic conference (either in-person or virtual), attend workshops on conference paper writing and delivery, and complete a written post-conference self-assessment. Fulfilment of this credit will be determined by the Principal Supervisor and the Module Coordinator.

Learning Outcomes:

This module recognizes the importance of academic conferences for the development of PhD students. Through conference participation, workshops, and self-assessment, the module allows students to develop essential skills, including:
-the writing of abstracts
-the writing of conference papers
-presentation and networking skills
-critical self-assessment of conference performance

The content of this module is customized to particular student needs, and may include: abstract-writing; budgeting for conference travel; effective presentations; Q&A practice; conference networking.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students will receive feedback from the module coordinator on their participation in the workshops, which will include active/task-based learning exercises. Students will be asked to self-assess their conference paper performance, and will receive feedback from the module coordinator and their supervisor on their paper.
