AH50010 Teaching & Tutoring

Academic Year 2023/2024

Students who lecture and/or tutor for the School (or other Schools in the university, subject to approval) will be entitled to earn credit for this activity. Experience developing curricula, formulating teaching plans, delivering lectures/tutorials and assessments are vital aspects of postgraduate training that will be delivered through this experience. PhD students will be mentored during this process by permanent members of staff, and advised of other learning opportunities related to teaching and learning skill development. Four teaching hours per trimester (and the related preparation & assessment time), and the completion of a final reflective writing assignment, will be deemed equivalent to fulfil the requirements of this module.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will demonstrate ability to create lesson plans; deliver course content effectively; engage students in discussion and active learning; carry out assessment efficiently and in concert with School principles of teaching and learning; and self-reflect on their teaching experiences.

Indicative Module Content:

The content of the module will change based on students' needs, but may include: developing a lesson plan; lecturing and discussion-leading activities; marking and rubrics; etc.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module is structured around active/task-based learning activities, which include student's classroom teaching responsibilities. Mentorship of postgraduate teaching will be offered by full-time academic staff, including the student's supervisor. A final writing assignment will offer students the chance to reflect on their teaching performance.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Feedback on teaching/tutoring performance is available via the postgraduate student supervisor or module coordinator. The module coordinator will offer feedback on the final writing assignment within two weeks of the due date.
