AESC40370 Research Project (AESC) 2

Academic Year 2023/2024

A supervised research project combining an appropriate, formal literature review on a topic relevant to the studied taught M.Sc. programme (MERM, RECM, MWCM), a body of research investigation, and a discussion of the findings in the context of the reviewed sources.

Topics may be drawn from the environmental or biological sciences or other cognate disciplines. The research content will be guided by a supervising, full-time member of UCD academic staff or of UCD postdoctoral research staff, whose involvement must be agreed in advance. Collaboration with a second staff member, or external co-supervisor is also allowed.

Students will prepare a research proposal near the start of the summer trimester, reflecting background preparation during the first two trimesters of study.

Students are expected to maintain regular contact with their agreed supervisor(s), who will provide guiding support, advice, and constructive criticism on an initial draft of the tesis, prior to final submission.

The research must lead to a thesis in a form consistent with the requirments of publication and archiving, being an original composition, while using and acknowledging appropriate published and accessible sources.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, the student will be expected to have composed a thesis reporting a body of supervised research, having achieved the following:
Worked with a supervisor to design, implement and review an achievable investigation;
Completed a literature review of the current state of knowledge of the topic;
Identified clear objectives;
Scoped, organised, applied and reported an appropriate set of methods within available resources;
Presented a research proposal;
Documented results as original observations, in both comprehensive and concise forms;
Discussed the outcomes of findings with respect to reviewed literature.
Used suitable consistent presentation.
Students are expected to maintain regular contact with their assigned supervisor(s), who will provide guiding support, advice, and constructive criticism on an initial draft of the thesis, prior to final submission.
The research must lead to a thesis in a form consistent with the needs of publication and archiving, being an original composition, while using and acknowledging appropriate published and accessible sources.

Indicative Module Content:

Students will prepare a research proposal near the start of the 15-week summer semester, reflecting background preparation during the first two semesters of study. There are no classes scheduled in this module, all work being done by the student according to the agreed needs as identified in the proposal, and as part of supervision.
Students will develop their research activity, subject to available resources, potentially involving field, lab, or desktop study, in collaboration with their agreed supervisor. Locations, activities, and research approaches are as discussed and agreed, and may be in any suitable location and manner, and desk-based topics will be offered. Field and laboratory study offerings may provide home-based practical alternatives where required and appropriate. Key dates for proposal, and for submission of draft and final thesis, will offer a minimal framework within which the research must be completed. If work in other seasons is needed, it must be done before the trimester of this module, and can not be done after.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students must take initiative, and will have opportunities to approach potential supervisors. While project topics may be offered, it is up to students to discuss with potential supervisors options for study, which may be in any scholarly discipline, subject to offer of supervision. Supervisory support from outside the local group of academics, or outside UCD, may by agreement be allowed, in collaboration with a UCD supervisor drawn from academic or postdoctoral staff (note, postgraduate students may assist, but not be supervisors).

Feedback Strategy/Strategies

• Feedback individually to students, on an activity or draft prior to summative assessment

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Feedback to students will be available during the research period, as part of the supervision role. The student should be an active agent in the feedback process, such as by proposing meetings, making draft material available for review, and responding proactively to suggestions of their supervisor. At least one largely-complete draft of the thesis should be provided for review, by a given deadline, following which a final feedback will be given by the supervisor.
