ACM30030 Multivariable Calculus Eng II

This module introduces students to advanced techniques in multivariable
calculus with an emphasis on applications in Engineering and the Physical
Sciences. Topics covered will include: Vector fields and potentials, Grad, Div
and Curl; Transformations between rectilinear, cylindrical and spherical
co-ordinates; Line integral, work integrals; Double integrals and Green's
Theorem; Stokes' Theorem and the Divergence Theorem; Laplace's/Poisson's
equation; The heat equation, the wave equation; Fourier Transform,
Fourier Series and separation of variables techniques.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:
1: Evaluate the Gradient, Divergence and Curl of a scalar resp. vector field.
2: Transform problems from one coordinate system to another.
3: Calculate multiple integrals by elementary techniques.
4: Calculate line and surface integrals with the help of Green's and Stokes'
Theorem.
5: Solve and analyse Laplace's, Poisson's the heat and wave/string equations.
6: Determine the Fourier series and Transform of important functions.
7: Apply all of the above techniques to problems in engineering
and the physical sciences.
