Statistics is a part of our everyday lives. It is an important tool used in ecology, economics, education, geography, psychology, sociology and many other disciplines. Statistics deals with the collection, analysis and interpretation of numerical data. Statisticians also develop mathematical models for uncertainty, and investigate their properties and applicability. The power of modern computing has had a major impact on both the development and usefulness of statistical methods. Students interested in studying Statistics should have a good appreciation of mathematics and a desire to apply it to practical situations.

For the Stage 1 programme, you should have an A or B at the Pass Leaving Certificate level in Mathematics or at least a C at the Honours Leaving Certificate level. If you wish to pursue Statistics as a degree subject in Stage 2, you must have passed all four core modules, STAT10050, STAT10060, MST10010 and MST10020, offered in Stage 1. MST10030 must be completed in either Stages 1 or 2 but it is recommended that it be completed in Stage 1.

During the first stage, you will become familiar with statistical computing packages. Students interested in a career as an actuary would do well to consider a joint degree in Statistics and either Economics or Mathematical Studies.

For details of progressing to Stage 2, please check with the School of Mathematical Sciences.

Stage 1

We strongly recommend that students have achieved at least a H4 in Mathematics at Leaving Certificate or equivalent, if they intend to study Statistics.

Students who must take STAT10060 as a core module in the Spring trimester can only take STAT10050 in the Autumn trimester.

Students who wish to progress with Statistics in Stage 2 must have passed STAT10050, STAT10060, MST10010 and MST10020 in Stage 1.
