Stage 1 of the History syllabus is designed to introduce you to the study of history at university level. There are two programmes, each of which examines historical problems in a variety of countries over a long chronological period. The choice widens in Stages 2 and 3 where there are more than 40 modules on offer. Visiting Professors of American and of Australian history are attached to the UCD School of History & Archives, offering specialist modules. Other modules include the
Crusades; the Vikings; medieval Dublin; the foundations of modern Ireland, 1534-1800; the Irish Revolution, 1910-23; the French Revolution; the West and the Middle East; and Russian culture and society in the 19th and 20th centuries. History may be taken as a single-subject honours degree or as part of a joint major. The UCD School of History & Archives often gets enquiries from students who may not have had the chance to take History as a Leaving Certificate subject. If you enjoy reading, your overall examination performance in English, for example will offer a fair guide to your aptitude and you are most welcome to take History in UCD. History has proved particularly popular among students who have made careers in the media or in the civil service ranging from the Department of Foreign Affairs to the EU.
