This degree programme is designed for students interested in the multiple ways in which human expression, articulation and culture are encoded in different forms and media. It aims to equip students with the precise knowledge, history and critical vocabulary specific to each discrete discipline, but also to foster the ability to understand the complex and fascinating relationships between literature, drama and film/media by a focus on forms, genres, styles, themes and ideas as expressed across the full range of Anglophone cultural outputs. We educate students in the history of literary, dramatic, media and cultural production, in current theoretical methods and approaches, and in a wide range of historical and national literatures, genres and media. A focus on excellent reading, writing and presentation skills, along with the development of the capacity to argue and contextualise will be fostered via a range of teaching formats (lecture, tutorial, seminar, research supervision), and through strong support of peer learning within the English, Drama, Film degree cohort. We promote our core values – independence, creativity, collaboration, critical reflection, cultural engagement, and social and political consciousness – as we deepen and widen students’ knowledge, engage them in critical debate, and interpretation, foster independent thought, creativity and the capacity to find innovative solutions to key critical, ethical and interpretive problems.
Students are pre-registered to 8 core modules (40 credits). Students should then choose 3 modules (15 credits) from the Option Modules list and 1 elective module (5 credits). Stage 1 elective modules are chosen and take in the Spring trimester.
It is recommended that students spread their credit workload evenly between Autumn and Spring.
Students will be pre-registered to 6 core modules, 3 in the Autumn trimester and 3 in the Spring trimester. Students must choose a minimum of 2 Film Studies option modules, a minimum of 2 further option modules, and up to 2 general elective modules
For both Trimesters 1 & 2, students who are not away on either an Internship or Erasmus placements will make up their credit allocation (50-60 credits Option and/or 5-10 credits Elective) by choosing from the current Stage 3 modules offered by the School of English, Drama and Film.
Any students on a trimester exchange or internship in stage 3 should choose 30 credits (25 options & 5 elective or 30 options) for one trimester.
Students should register to the two core modules ENG30970 Dissertation Research Methods (5 credits) and ENG32460 Dissertation (15 credits). In addition, students should choose a minimum of 30 credits and a maximum of 40 credits from the list of options if they wish to take option modules in place of electives. If taking the maximum, ideally students should choose two 10 credit modules and one 5 credit module in the Autumn, and one 10 credit module and one 5 credit module in the Spring.
